What WP-BAC is
Sterile water containing 0.9% (w/v) benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, supplied in a 10 mL multi-use glass vial for laboratory bench preparations.
Mechanism described in the literature
Benzyl alcohol at 0.9% inhibits the growth of most bacteria introduced into a multi-use container, which is why bacteriostatic water is the standard general-purpose diluent on the research bench. Discard 28 days after the seal is first opened, in line with the multi-use-container convention.
